Mint State "Gloriana" Portrait Pound
Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Pound ND (1591-1595) MS61 NGC, Tower mint, Lion and Tun/Tun mm, Sixth issue, S-2534, Fr-214, N-2008. 11.09gm. The elaborately rendered "Gloriana" portrait with the serpentine ruff and intricate embroidery fixes the viewer's gaze on the youthful-looking Queen. The sharply struck legends are rewarded by a round flan that showcases each letter in its entirety while notes of peach creep in from the peripherals, adding vibrancy to the already charged presentation. Comparable examples that we have offered host different mint marks and are believed to have been struck in the years shortly before or after this issue, which we believe to have been struck 1593-1594. Thus, we anticipate spirited bidding for this scarce, lovely specimen.
